i guess someone lies to hide the truth, therefore it is the truth that is making the person lie.

Maybe they fear the truth, or what will happen if the truth became known. Perhaps the truth will hurt them or a person they are close to. And then there is the person that lies to hide a mistake, or avoid an arguement.

And last but not least, the white lie, the ones we tell in good faith, to make someone feel better. however it is only a white lie if no one is hurt because of it.

so choose your words carefully, and if you can do nothing else, be honest with yourself.

I have tried to figure that one out myself. Is it for attention? Because they don't want to take responsibilty for their own actions? How they were raised? Is it an inherited trait? Caused by a mental illness? Everyone lies to a certain extent. normally to hid something. Some because they like to hear themselves talk. I have a neice like that, when she runs out of the truth she just starts making things up. even most of her truths are exaggerted. When lies are told out of spite and end up hurting people or when the person telling the lie tells it so much they end up beliving it themselves, it's time for some therapy. The only thing I can think of is that they are not happy with themselves and want something differant, and during the time they are telling the lie they have that something differant.

Sometimes a really bad memory.
My ex used to lie all the time cause she couldn't remember certain thing so make them up as she didn't want to seem stupid.
Ironically she might forget she lied and maybe remember the truth or maybe lie again ect ..
Anyhow, it was never malicious and kind off entertaining sometimes.

Two thing make people lie firstly they beleive they will gain from it which gives them a sence of pleasure and secondly they will not feel pain as they have tried to get out of there situation by not telling the truth. It is a way of triing to avoid pain and gain a sense of pleasure.

In some cases fear but in others depending on the sort of lie maybe there are feelings of inadequacy.i remember when I was about 12 years old,I was desperate for a push bike,a girl at school told me she had one that I could have and that she would leave it outside the local railway station. She described it to me as well.Every day for 2weeks I went looking for that wretched bike but none appeared.I wonder what made her lie like that, maybe she wanted to feel important. How sad was I.

To avoid telling the truth, I guess!

Ever hear the expression, truth hurts? And it does hurt sometimes.

Have you ever told a lie? Even a small one? Why did you tell a lie and not the truth?

Some people are habitual liars, they lie about everything. Some people lie when backed against a wall; ect. I guess there are different occasions as to why they do it. I try not to lie. I'm afraid to. My mother taught me at a young age "what goes around, comes around" and that has stuck with me to this day.

Most often, when someone lies, it's because they think they're going to get into trouble and they're trying to keep themself out of it.

Some people get thrills out of lying, though, just like some people get a thrill out of skydiving or gambling. They make up fantastic stories just to see how much they can make someone else believe. There's the chance of getting caught in a lie. They like the danger of the possibility of being found out.
