BET does not exclude people. It's just a black channel. I don't even like it! Why would you assume that just because you're black, you will like BET? It goes both ways in my opinion. BTW, I would'nt have a problem with WET. I see it on every other channel every day.

The only difference is in the names themselves. CMT stands for "Country Music Televison" whereas BET stands for "Black Entertainment Television". Therefore, BET is more segregating with it's name. CMT is not directed toward an all white audience or it would be called something else. Therefore, you can't say that CMT is an all-white channel.

I don't really understand your question too much.
If you are asking what all the commotion is about people getting mad about BET saying it is the equivalent to CMT then i can try to give you my perspective on it.

BET stands for Black Entertainment Television, right?

CMT stands for Country Music Television, right?

People get mad at this (though i am not one, i could give less than a crap about it) because BET is literally mean for black people by black people. CMT is just a channel that plays country music. Yes, people have said there aren't many Black people on CMT, but I don't really ever see black people istening to Country mucis let alone making their own or singing their own. If there was a good black country music artist i am sure they would be on there (i wouldn't know cause i don't listen to country).
I have watched BET a few times and some of the stuff i like (however i am not a real big rap fan either... music isn't really my forte'). However when i am watching it and there are degrading things said about white people ingeneral, yeah that kinda makes me mad. But hey, everyone has the right to free speech, and what do i do with the TV? Turn the channel.
People are giving too much thought to BET and CMT. They are TV stations and not anything more. If someone doesn't like what either one has to offer...... don't watch that channel. Period... end of story!

I'm black and I listen to all types of music - Rap, R&B though not as much, Metal, Classical, and Country. I personally like Dixie Chicks, Gretchen Wilson (sings Redneck Woman) and Johnny Cash (some may or may not consider him country)

If you must break down every channel by white and black, that's sad. CMT is a country music channel, no more, no less. BET goes a step further to state race, so that's a different story. LOGO is known to be a gay/lesbian channel. But CMT is just for country music, not white people solely.

It's not fair to anyone to overgeneralize.

I don't think it's racist but I think it's innacurate. BET has Black in the name and clearly is targeted at Black Americans with a mission to bring quality black programming to them. whether or not they succeed is another story. CMT is aimed at country music fans which is primarily a white audience but I think CMT probably has more black viewers than BET has white viewers. That's just a guess. i have no facts to support it so if any does please post them.

P.S. I don't watch either although very rarely I find something on BET worth watching. Never on CMT. If i have to watch a music channel I'll watch FUSE.

You know I thought about it more and I think I'm wrong.

Probably because BET is short for Black Entertainment and CMT is short for Country Music Television. As a white girl, I prefer BET, mainly because I hate country music. I say we should watch whichever we prefer. I'm sure there's some black people who prefer CMT.

I understand your confusion. The concepts of Equal Rights and Integration seem at odds with "black only" TV stations or "black only" organizations and schools. But it really isn't worth worrying about. I personally wouldn't watch a "white only" TV station any more than I would watch BET. It all comes down to market forces anyway, and there is an argument that black people are actually being played by entrepreneurs who want to cash in by appealing to their sense of "black empowerment". In the end 99% of what's on TV is there to make money, and money from blacks spends just as well as anyone else's.

BET stands for Black Entertainment Television. It's not illegal for white people to watch it, but there aren't many shows on there I like.

CMT is Country Music Television, and while country music may be primarily white, it's not exclusive; Charlie Pride comes to mind immediately, and there are many other non-caucasian artists becoming more popular. There's an asian guy whose name I can't remember that's really good.
