Assuming you know roughly what you want, let your mind meander. When you are relaxed or partly daydreaming, gradually introduce interest points revolving around your subject. As you add more points of interest, alternate between relaxing the criteria of related matters to your subject matter, and adding conventionally defined or specific subject issues.

Start thinking from your viewpoint of comfort zone, and choosing a viewpoint in direct inverse relationship. You may want to vocalise your thoughts or verbalise is aloud in a quiet space.

Develop analytical and speculative thinking, including the ability to articulate and criticise various perspectives or problems, using vocabulary, concepts and methods that reflect the principal historical traditions in the field.

Alternatively, flush a subject through repetition by doing an overview of the subject matter, hooking onto salient points. Do not commit non-sensical thoughts but allow these as a breathing space in your mind.

Thought repetition, understanding salient points and get a regular through rhythm (music, speech, physical habits)

Sit on a chair take a breath simoultaneously counting to 5 (to yourself, not loudly),
hold the breath counting to 5,
let it go counting to 5
and stay without breath counting to 5.

Repeat this 5 times.

This is very effective, I can't figure out why. It has very calming effect and make your thoughts very clear even if you are tired. There is another one, harder, that will make you sweat, but the effect is longer, 2-3 days.
