When immersed in a liquid or gas (specifically: a fluid), an object that is denser than the surrounding fluid will sink to the bottom, and the object that is lighter than the surrounding fluid will float to the top.

This explains:
1.) why heavy objects sink
2.) why Hydrogen and Helium escape out of the atmosphere (unless they react with something along the way)
3.) why different fluids that cannot mix will sort out into different layers - for example, why a slick of oil will float on top of the water.

Using the concepts of density is how they design buoys for oceanic navigation, balloons (especially hot air and weather balloons), and fluid mechanics.
