Light gives us a sense of safety and security from things that go bump in the dark.
Since time immemorial mankind has filled the darkness with monsters, devils, ghosts and the like. It goes to reason they would rationalize that if they were safe in the light then those things hated the light.
This probably comes from real experiences - not with ghosts but with ancient predators. Fire kept animals away but outside the ring of light, a person was in danger of being eaten by an unseen predator. So light became good and dark became bad because you could get eaten in the dark by predators with good night vision.

I do not believe in ghosts or spirits but situations can create the right climate for the imagination. Legend has it that bad witches can not cross water that is why in "Tam O'Shanter" (Burns) the witches flew after Tam when he was watching them dance in the Aloway Kirk. He rode hard across the Aloway mill stream bridge but the lead witch pulled out his horses tail and to this day there are a few red cobblestones on the bridge within the grey ones. Another superstition tale is that ghost can not cross the plane of a mirror so some people have mirrors in both directions across their bed; others have a glass of water beside their bed. Spookiest feeling I had was on Cullodon Moore in Scotland at sunset; everyone else had departed and I had an overwhelming feeling of the doom and tragedy that had happened there as I walked back to the entrance.

I've seen souls without bodies during the day so I would have to say no they are not afraid of the light.

Believe only in the natural world- - - the supernatural doesn't exist. There is no such thing as ghosts or spirits.

No, why would they be afraid, they are already gone?! It is an ability to be able to perceive them in our natural state that makes the dusky atmosphere important.
