I have Chinese friends in Paris and there are Chinatowns or a semblance of it around.
Have fun, learn the language and enjoy the sights, sounds and food. Watch where you step. They don't scoop after their dogs.

I am half Chinese and I have spent a great deal of time in Paris. I have never encountered the slightest prejudice there.
I cannot vouch for people's attitudes in La Rochelle but I suspect that most French discrimination is directed at the large immigrant population from Africa.

There are many chinese people in France : students but also families.
I think every town, including smaller ones, has at least one chinese restaurant owned by chinese, thai or vietnam(ian?) people.
Paris has a Chinatown, in the 13th arrondissement.
I don't know La Rochelle, but if it's a student city, your bf won't be the only chinese there!!

Edit : laura p is wrong, french speak english. They speak it quite bad, but they speak it! Especially students and youths, who are more open-minded about foreign languages.

Don't worry about your nationality.
Some french guys are stupid, racists... But not more than in other countries.
If you say you're Chinese, people will be nice with you and help you :)
However, to live in France is quite expensive.

French do`nt speak Chinese , not even English , they only speak French .
Your friend is better off to study in Belgium , they speak all kinds of languages .
Schools are a lot better too .

Lean to speak their language. If you are China Chinese, speak softly and politely.Don't argue your chinese rights in their country.
