Absolutely no worries!! No car is needed in Cancun as there are buses running up and down the hotel strip all day and all night about every 5 to 20 mins depending on the time of day... All the clubs are generally in the Hotel Zone - just make sure that you have change and get on the right side of the road to go back to your hotel at the end of the night!
If on the other hand you want to jump in a taxi, you can! Just wave your arm out into the road and one will stop and ask you where to... Best thing is to say where you wanna go and agree on a price before you get in as most of the cabs aren't metered, but have guidance pricing... You'll normally pay around 10 to 25 US dollars as cabs cost more in the hotel zone.. (Downtown to downtown cab prices are much cheaper)..
If you want to see the ruins you can always book a trip from your hotel lobby, go to the tour place directly or book your own private taxi (lil bit more expensive).. If you want to do it the real cheap way go to one of the many timeshare presentations in Cancun and they usually give you one or two tours for free for going along and listening to their presentation!!! Problem solved..
Have a great time when you go! Wish I were back there again!

I currently live in Cancun and to tell you the truth, no you don't need a car. There is a great bus system that runs through the hotel zone and all the way to down town Cancun. Even without a car you will still enjoy the mayan ruins and ecological parks like Xcaret, Xel-Ha etc. Here in Cancun they have tour buses that will take you to all the attractions out of Cancun. So don't worry even without a car you will experience all of Cancun and Riviera Maya.

The town of Cancun is small, as are nearly all of their lasting and temporary inhabitants. It absolutely was only a small mud barrier some 35 years ago once the strategy started to develop it into the vacation haven of the 21st century. Today you have the opportunity to visit it, with hotelbye . Now en time, Cancun includes a medium-sized coastal city and a lengthy, slim island linked to the mainland through bridges at its north and south ends. It characteristics world-class resorts, resorts, clubs, and malls. It offers something for everyone, from an all-day fun party beach to an isolated, tranquil island. This can be a great place so learn it now!

Many people is going to tel you that you don't need a car, but I traveled to Cancun last Spring Break and I rented a Jeep. You should know that to rent a car they hold $1,000 in your credit card; this happened at AVIS. I rented the Jeep for 3 days and drove to TULUM, Playa del Carmen, Xel-Ha, Ixcaret... at my own pace and commodity (it is just a straight highway). In the other hand if you don't have a license there is no way you can rent a car legally! If the car does not works out for you there are many tours that you can book online or at the hotel that include transportation. Enjoy Cancun! WATCH WHAT YOU EAT....

You don't need a car for Cancun, lots of buses and taxis. As for ruins there are many tour operators that will take you. You pay one price and usually your bus, guide, admission and lunch are included for that price. Can't say for sure but I would expect that a bus tour to Chichen Itza with all the above included would be about $80-$100 for the day. That's just a guess though could be more or could be less.

I live in Cancun and rent often from America Car Rental. I have yet to have a problem with them. They have several offices throughout Cancun and are very friendly. Best of luck!

No. Cancun has a great bus system that runs 24 hrs a day along Paseo Ku Kul Kan (where the hotels are located). There are two options: the standard bus line (economic fares) and the One line (a little more expensive fares, but with new coaches and Air Conditioning system).
