I'm looking for something reasonably small with internet facility, Wi-fi, email and messenger.

i've looked some phones such as Nokia N80 but they don't seem to quite there yet with connection speed, etc.

Has anyone any experience of the Nokia 770 tablet, or what about the Blackberry?

My laptop does the job but looking for something much much smaller.

Thanks in advance.

So many different Phones, PDA, etc have been mentioned here. I am sure that each of them has their own merits and demerits. Lets look at these for a moment. Say you get a TREO the price should be around US$ 400 and up. A new I-mate JASJAR will easily cost you upwards of USD $ 550.
Now remember that TREO is a Smartphone. This means that it will allow you to make phone calls, surf the Web look at you e-mails etc.

To make phone calls you need a Phone Service Plan, which will cost you money. In addition to that if you want to surf the Web you have to get a Data plan that will cost you more money.

Then there is this aspect of Windows. If you are stuck to Microsoft Operating Systems then Smart phones are for you. Most Smart Phones run Windows or some related Version of Windows (Windows CE etc). There are also Palm PDA’s that run Palm OS.

Some of these have Wi-fi and others connect by the way of CDPD, GPRS etc. They have fast processors (generally Intel Xscale Processors etc), but the fact that they use the ' still bloated ' Version of Windows makes them almost useless.

Blackberry Devices (RIM) are good but they too need a Data Plan and a Phone Plan. Even if you have a ( Cingular ?) Phone Plan you still need a Data Plan along with this to use the Blackberry to Surf the Web.

Dell Axims are standalone PDA made by Dell. They look good and run Windows Mobile. The only problem is that the Wi-Fi implementation on these are not that good.

Nokia 770 on the other hand is an Internet Tablet. According to Nokia its main function is to enable the user to Surf the Web easily. It does this really good. It has built in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth not to mention the extremely beautiful Screen.

It has everything that you mentioned in your requirements. It has great Internet Accessibility, good quality Wi-fi, Email and different kinds of Messenger etc. Along with this it is a good Audio Player has great battery life (Lithium Polymer Battery). The best thing about the Nokia 770 is the fact that since it has a good Wi-Fi enablement, you do not need to pay through your nose to get a Data plan. You will surf the web by accessing free flying Wireless signals. If this is not available to you (or at your location) then you can get a GPRS enabled Bluetooth phone and pair the Nokia 770 to it and surf the web. With the implementation of VOIP the Nokia770 will work as a phone as well.

It has its drawback one of them being the fact that it uses Debian Linux (Open Source) as its operating system. So if you are uncomfortable with Linux then it probably is not for you.

One would wish if these things were as easy to use as one wished. There is much more development of these that is actually required.

Please do bear in mind that none of the above mentioned devices could truly replace your Laptop. You will have to select and chose which aspect of a particular device appeals to you more and decide accordingly.
