Hi, I can't see it being the cables inside the computer, as I have never opened it up recently, could someone not knowing what they are doing move the drives off the screen to somewhere else, i.e my computer is used by someone else, would the cables just loosen?

Your system probably just needs to be rebooted. Low system memory can cause devices to start mysteriously disappearing... it's common in older operating systems like Win98 but can happen in XP as well. Has the system been up & running for quite some time without being turned off or rebooted?

If someone else uses your computer- then yikes, they might have deleted or disabled the CD drives. Go to control panel/system/device manager and see if the drives appear there. If they've been disabled, you can enable them again. If they were accidentally removed, they should reappear once the system is powered off and rebooted.

Otherwise you'd want to check the cables- it's even possible the motherboard IDE controller for the CD drives might have failed, but a loose ribbon is more likely than that. Sometimes cables aren't all that secure to begin with and over time can loosen, especially if there's a lot of heat inside the case.

Made any changes before it happened? If you hve XP you might try a restore point to when it worked. If that doesn't help:

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

1.. Click Start, and then click Run.
2.. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3.. Locate the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/Curretcontrolset/Control/Class/{4d36e965-e325-11ce
-bfc1-08002be10318}

4.. On the File menu, click Export.
5.. In the File name box, type savedkey, and then click Save.
6.. Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type UpperFilters, and then click Delete on the Edit menu. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
NOTE: If this data type is missing, continue to the next method.
7.. Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type LowerFilters, and then click Delete on the Edit menu. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
8.. Quit the Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

(for the long strings that have the ... in them, floating the cursor over them will let you read them. Don't know why Y! does that to long strings)

Even if your cables were dodgy, you would still see your hard wear on your desktop.

If someone else is using your computer, check that they have not been deleted and are sitting in your recycle bin. Failure to find them, think back to the last time you seen them and do a system restore. If you do a system restore, make sure you back up anything that you have added to your computer since the date you have picked, and they should re-appear.

Hope this helps.

This is what you must do in order to put all your information in order. First you must go to this website.http://www.iolo.com/sm/
After you have done that then you must Download System Mechanic professional 6. With DriveScrubber2. After you have done that and installed it you have that installed you have to preform a DriveScrubber2 as soon as it is installed. After that is complete you have to restart your pc. After you restart then you will have to preform all the other scans on System Mechanic 6 after that is done your pc will look and run great. I should know i never had any complaints when i recommend it to all the other people. They love it. After everything is done all your files and folders will be in perfect shape. You should be able to access your email. If that doesnt work you can go for the old try and true method. You are going to need 3 tools. 2 magnets and a hammer. Take off the metal pc tower exposing the hard drive and everything else. After that is done take out your motherboard and hard drive. Take the motherboard and break it in half. Dont worry your pc will run 5 times better. After that is done take the 2 magnets and run them over the hard drive. Leave them there for 2 days then come back to check on it. take the magnets away and put everything back together and turn on the pc. There you go you have the very fastest pc in the world. No need to thank me.
