I know, I know, if it ain't broke, don't fix it...

All the same, if someone were to take the time and put in the effort of creating a website that is simular to this one, maybe with more categories and a totally different rating system, do you think it would get used or would people just spend all their time here and not try out a new place?

Really curious!

My guess is that this would remain the predominant site because it's already established and has a large number of users.

Any new site would have to start from scratch and is unlikely to be enticing enough to attract people away from here (unless they earned dollars instead of points).

One of the keys to the success of this site is the number of questions and the number of users - unless a new site could compete on that level it's unlikely to succeed. It's a bit similar to eBay which is the primary auction site because that's where all the buyers and sellers are, there are many competitors but all of them are small by comparison.

Any serious competition would have to come from a company with an already high profile and a lot of backing, someone along the lines of Google or Microsoft etc.

Yahoo Answers has more or less snatched the answers market from Google already - maybe they're planning a comeback.
