I've heard about singing through the mask. Why is it called the "mask"?

Have you seen those old-fashioned masks where they cover the upper half of your face - eyes, cheeks and nose? Like they wore at a costume ball. Anyway, you're supposed to feel like the sound production is coming from up there, as opposed to the mouth and throat.
