I work with homeless. Most homeless in the US are only homeless for a short time. The "chronically homeless" normally have a developmental disability, mental illness, drug or alcohol problem or a combination of any of these. So No, most do not make a conscience choice to become homeless and any that do normally have a social or mental disorder that contributes to their choice.

Some persons, no. They are ill, have lost their job... As a person who was in that place last year... it is hard to find a job and a home when you don't have an address. Some are too proud to ask for help to get them off the street. Others - yes. Choose to be homeless. I knew a person that would rather beg on the streets which a sign on the corner than get a job, because the money, and drugs, are better that way. And it was a choice that she made, even though, at any time, she had a home she could go to, without loss of pride.

Obviously some homeless people are victims of circumstance and would move into any kind of shelter if it were available. However, some years ago, a project was undertaken to provide housing for the homeless and, once it was finished, the do gooders went out and gathered enough of them up to fill the facilities. A few days later, most of them had move back out. Interviews determined that a lot of them saw their ability to survive "under the bridge" as a mark of independence. They felt that receiving charity in the form of free housing robbed them of their dignity.

Think about this for a second... hmmm i think i'll purposely find a reason to not work and get kicked out of my home... then i'll go in a shelter and sleep on a cot... oh but i can only stay here for a couple days... then i'll have to find a park bench... WOW that sounds like fun!!!
No, no one chooses to be homeless. They may make choices that lead them to be homeless but they dont' make the choice thinking "i'll choose this so i become homeless". A lot of homeless have no choice. They get sick they can't work, they lose their home. Things happen.

some of them do , either because they have no ambition to be better or possibly for mental reason or drug and/or alochol addictions, but some do not choose to be homeless, it can be certain circumstances that render them homeless. Some people will eventually overcome their difficulties and straighten their lives out, but some will not and will live their lives homeless and die homeless.
