Only if you live in a warm climate and keep a pump/filter running at all times, they have to have de-chlorinated water to live in, then after awhile depending on how many fish you have in there for the size of the pool the ammonia level from the fish urine will peak and you will have to do water changes at least once a month. De-chlorinate the water and make sure you have proper filtration and circulation in the pool at all times.

A goldfish will probably make more of a mess than keep it clean. Plus...the chemicals in the pool water will kill it.

Well, if you lowered the chlorine level to near zero so they could survive, you could put fish in your pool. But goldfish are messy on their own, so I don't think they would make any positive results in keeping your pool clean and in fact would probably make it dirtier.

No of course you can't. The chemicals would kill the fish and even if the fish didn't die, they wouldn't keep it any cleaner.
