Sure. I lived in Cambridge for a while. It's only an hour from London on the train. If you leave early on Saturday morning, you can spend a whole day in the city and catch the last train back. Or stay over in one of the cities many backpackers lodges and return on Sunday.
There is also a bus that runs from Cambridge to London. It costs about a fiver less, but takes 4hours! I wouldn't recommend it.
The train is about £12 for same day return, £15 for a open return.
A night in a London backpackers lodge, about £10.
Also try and get a student rail card. It's about £20, but is valid for a year, and gives 20% off. So in the end, you save more than that £20.
Have fun.

Certainly. By train, by coach or by car. About one hours journey by all means. If by car, there is no Congestion Charge on Saturday or Sunday. Beware though of Central London - most weekends there is something or other going on which causes traffic jams - Demonstrations, Royalty, etc. Usually, matrix signs on incoming roads give such details. Parking restrictions are also suspended in most areas at weekends.............
