This makes him untradable and what happens if he doesn't like the coach, then the coach has to go, right? The guy has been in the league for 5 yrs and was 26 th in save percentage. Thats a stat you can't blame on a crap defence.

I can understand this kind of contract if the player in question has stood head and shoulders above every other player at his position (ie, Orr, Gretzky, Lemieux). Based on his performance thus far, there's a solid argument that DiPietro isn't even among the top 10 goalies in the league on any given night, bad defense or no.

This is a rookie mistake by a rookie GM. This kind of thing has a trickle-down effect too. There's no reason for your amateur scouts to look at goalies for at least the next decade, so you potentially miss out on the next Dryden, Roy or Hasek that is coming down the pike. You're also stuck drafting defensemen that have to adapt to the way he handles the puck, which ties the hands of your coaches on both the minor league AND NHL level.

As the questioner said, you can't trade the guy, so you're throwing up a prayer that he doesn't develop an attitude problem. His journeymen teammates may resent his security and his "protected" status with the organization.

When Wang promoted Garth Snow to GM after firing Neil Smith, I thought he was a bit loony. This confirms my diagnosis.

Yeah, Islanders owner Charles Wang is insane. First he fires Neil Smith after only hiring him six weeks before. Then he replaces Smith with his back-up goalie, Garth Snow. Now he gives a goalie who can't reach his potential a 15 year contract. I kinda feel sorry for Islander fans. You guys won't be celebrating a Cup win for at least 15 years.

(Oh, was Wang around when the Islanders signed Alexei yashin to a 10 year deal?)

i think this is the best thing to happen on the isle in quite some time. i was extremely excited about it. DP will be the goalie everyone will wish they had. he's only 24 and goalies usually don't reach their potential til 28-30. plus inflation, this guy is going to be a cheap player salary wise in a couple years. they also have insurance incase of any career ending injury. The biggest reason i love this move is b/c the isles haven't had a franchise player since Lafontaine. something you need to win a stanley cup. finally the isles have a face and it is D.P.

I have to wonder about a team that takes a goalie off the ice to become the GM and then signs a decent goaltender to such a contract. The owner is nuts. I'm a Flyers fan and my heart goes out to the Islander fans. We had a crazy owner of the Sixers that did stupid things like that.

Short answer, anytime you sign a guy that long you are crazy. As to being untradable I doubt it. Someone will always find a way to make a trade if they really want. Either that or they will just release him.

The Islanders exsist in a little world i like to call Crazy, generally found somewhere in the twilight Zone.
Its kinda sad, because at one point in time the NYI were a respectable team, I think with Milbury's arrival, respect took a back seat, and now they are the laughingstock of the NHL, Like the cousin you don't want to talk about. What team goes out and hires their backup goalie as its GM?? Especially since there are some more qualfied indivduals out there, ie Pat Quinn, among others.
Like DUH????

The Islander's management has made some real questionable moves. They are making it difficult for long time fans to keep supporting them. This move does appear to have a little bit of insanity associated with it.

he hasn't proven him self once since he joined the NHL. the Islanders had a way better team the the Florida Panthers and look at Luongo, his stats compared to the ones of DiPietro make him look like a pee-wee goalie. that was a mistake but hey, i don't care it's not my team i cheer for so let them do what ever they want.

GO HABS GO!!!!!!!!!!!
