Its a tough situation... but with all honesty would you like to remain "friends" with some one that throws a pen to your face?
I know i wouldn't, not even if it was meant to be harmless; if it wasn't meant to be harmless even worse!
Avoid contact with them but if you happen to come across them then be nice (not hypocritical)
If you have the choice to change shifts then do it !! It will be for your benefit.
And no dont tell your boss unless you decide to change shifts and h/she wants a reason why, Besides that do not tell your boss word will get around or your boss might go and try to sit you and your co-worker together so you can make-up or just to get the story from both side.
Trust me...It only makes the problem worse especially when you are dealing with some one so inmature that they throw pens at faces!
GOOD LUCK. I hope I was able to help you.

Go with strictly business until things settle down.
Btw, throwing a pen at someone is dangerous activity that could result in injury. Speak to the co-worker who did that and voice your concerns in a business like manner. Then report what happened to your supervisor.
When a hostile work environment is created, then there needs to be some action taken by the supevisor or management.

Try and sort it out with the co-worker, and if you can't get it settled then the two of you should sit down with HR and hash it out until you come to a point where you are happy. You have to face these people everyday, and since it is obviously bothering you, eventually it will start to affect your productivity and your job satisfaction. If you do not get it settled, you will probably be so unhappy at your job that you will start looking elsewhere.
Nip it early so it does not affect your life anymore. Probably a 10 minute discussion between you two and your HR department will get it settled.
Good luck

Strictly Business, Work is Work. Some co-workers refuse to be friendly.

I think you should talk to your boss about it, don't be quiet about it. Throwing a pen, although immature, can hurt you if it hits you in the eye. I would not talk to the co-workers about this because then they will think you backstab people.

Yeah - all the posters are right.. You aren't there for social hour.
Stick to your job. I would definately report the pen-thrower to his/her supervisor though.
