Don't worry about your language barrier, almost everyone in Cancun speaks english, especially in the Hotel Zone.
I live in Cancun and right now there is not to much tourist in town. Due to last years hurricane, people are still a little scared. Don't get me wrong there are people in town, but not as much as usual.
If you so come this time of year it's great weather to swim. The beaches are probably the best they have been, ever!
There's ton's of things to do here in Cancun and outside of Cacnun.

In Cancun:

-Wet n Wild Water Park
-Beaches
-Snorkling
-Boat rentals
-Boat tours of the Lagoon and ocean
-Swiming with the dolphins
-Acquarium at La Isla Shopping Mall
-Great shopping malls
-Scuba Diving
-Parasailing
-Great Resturants
-Great Night Life
-Downtown Cancun
(great resturants, shopping, and great prices)
-Ferry to Isla Mujeres
Isla Mujeres is an island located off the Cancun shore. It's about a 20 min ferry ride. There they have the best beaches in the Cancun, Isla Mujeres area. It's a tiny island. Everyone drives golf carts and mopeds. They have a dolphin adventure there, a turtle park, and they are known for their snorkling in Isla Mujeres, they also have great fishing tours there, never coming back empty handed.

Outside of Cancun:
-Playa del Carmen
(A little town about an hour drive from Cancun. Great beaches, shopping, etc.)
-Xcaret (natural water park)
http://www.xcaret.com/
-Akun Chen(nature park)
http://www.aktunchen.com/
-Xel-Ha(natural water park)
http://www.xel-ha.com/services/forum.php
-Tulum(mayan ruins)

-Puerto Aventuras
http://www.puertoaventuras.com/
and so much more. There's so much to do and see here. So don't worry you'll have tons to do the only problem you'll have is not having enough time to do everything you want to do. And remember don't worry about you not speaking enlgish, almost everyone here does, in the hotel zone, and you'll find some people who speak english in downtown Cancun.

Spanish is not necessary in Cancun, but is useful.

Its warm there year round.

Cancun is a beach vacation place, there are bars , dance clubs, restaurants, water sports, spas, and big hotels with lovely water views.

Its not much of a cultural center, and you're more likely to make friends with a New Yorker than a Mexican. Don't go there expecting a very Mexican vacation.

There are some nice day trips to be had, and I had a good time renting a car and driving south of the city for a day.

Don't let the language barrier stop from enjoying such a beautiful place. In the other hand most of hotel employees speak English. The beach is just beautiful: white sand and turquoise water. There are two Ecologic Water Parks: Xel-Ha and Ixcaret; where you can snorkel, hike, swim in underground rivers, swim with the dolphins,... Great nightlife, the best disco I have ever being to: Coco Bongo. Also if you are interested in historical sites you can visit some mayan ruins. And most of all Cancun is not like little Mexico anymore, it is more like little US specially during Spring Break!

You can survive not speaking spanish, as everyone that works
with the tourists speaks English so well it would make the Queen of England weep. When there's money to be made, you better
believe they speak it! They even are hip to slang and are really funny(locals), when you work with them.
It's cheap to go there. Go see the archeological stuff around there
if we have time too. There are some really interesting vestiges of
an ancient indian civilization just like the mayas there.
It will be pretty slow out there in the fall, mostly older folks and
retirees, cause all the kids are in school. Best time to go is Dec-Mar., when all the action happens.

Take a snorkeling excursion to Cozumel. It's quieter and you won't believe how many things you see in the bottom of the ocean.
