Mainly that you do not have a cable from the mouse to the PC, but I have had one and it was not the best! Make sure you buy a good make, reliable name etc.

Note that there are two different meanings of "infra-red mouse".

One uses infra-red as the motion detector instead of a ball or wheel. This is more usually called an "optical mouse". The second meaning is one which uses an infrared link to communicate with the computer instead of a cable. This is more commonly called a "cordless mouse", but may well be described as infra-red to differentiate it from the type of cordless mouse which uses radio.

The advantages of an optical mouse are that it doesn't have moving parts to wear out, it doesn't accumulate fluff/dirt inside those moving parts, and will work on a wider range of surfaces than a wheel/ball mouse. The advantages of a cordless mouse is that it doesn't require to be as close to your PC base unit and you don't have a wire trailing across your desk.

If you mean a wireless mouse, I don't think there are any because of the battery needed to power the mouse. If you mean an oprical mouse, they're brilliant. As well as all the other features mentioned in the preious answers, I find it much easier to use as I have arthritis. I've got more control over the mouse than with a ball, and have to move less. I can rest the heel of my hand on a gel pad and just move a small amount because I don't have to push the ball over the pad. And its more precise which is great if you're doing graphics.

In infra-red mouse:
1. you don't neet to clean the ball for some dirt. dirt causes stuck your mouse.
2. It's not surface dependent. you can use your mouse on the table without mouse pad.
3. less maintenance.

Or do you mean WIRELESS Optical Mouse which is the same but no cables...

One big advantage of an infared mouse is that you don't have dirt collecting in the ball area, so less time cleaning your mouse.

So far mine hasn't died. I went through three of the ball kind in the same length of time I've had this one with no trouble.
