Craig will always win.

You don't have to do any maths to work this out, the reason is more fundamental.

The reason is because....

Joan is averaging 5mph slower one way and then 5mph faster on the way back. This suggests that one would offset the other and so Joan's time would be the same as Craig's.

However, while Joan is travelling at 10mph (going 5mph slower than Craig) it takes her longer to get from A to B than it does for her to get from B to A doing 20mph (going 5 mph faster than Craig).

Thus, Joan is suffering her 5mph penalty for longer than she is gaining her 5mph benefit. So, overall, she loses out.

Didn't follow that? OK, look at it this way. Suppose the distance from A to B is 60 miles. Joan will take 6 hours to do that at 10mph, but only 3 hours to do it at 20mph. Thus, she suffers a 5mph penalty for 6hours, but gains a 5mph benefit for only 3 hours.

So, she's always gonna lose.

Craig. For example - a one mile each way race. Craig covers a mile in 4 minutes at 15mph so takes 8 mins for the whole race. Joan's first mile takes 6 mins at 10 mph, and her return mile at 20 mph takes 3 mins, so she finishes a minutes behind Craig - the discrepancy is the same on a pro rata basis whatever the distance.

For example assume the race is 15 miles each way
Craig would take 1 hour each way - 2 hours
Joan would take 1 and a half hours and then 3/4 of an hour back making a total of 2 and 1/4 hours. CRAIG WINS

For simplicity of discussion, just assume that the total distance is 60 miles (any other distance will do).
Time taken by Craig=60/15= 4 hours.
Time taken by Joan=30/10+30/20=3+1.5=4.5 hours.
Craig wins!

Craig wins over any distance D miles in each direction. Craig runs the first half in D/15 hours, likewise for the return, and he finishes the race in 2D/15 hours. Joan runs the first half in D/10 hours, but the return takes her only D/20 hours, adding the 2 gives you her total time of 3D/20 hours. 2D/15 is always less than 3D/20, so Craig is the winner.

In order to tie Joan would have to change from 10mph to 20 mph at the half way point in time not the half way point in distance.so if Joan did 10 miles in 1 hour then 20 miles in 1 hour that would equal Craig's 30 miles in 2 hours.

Craig wins

he averages 15mph all the way
she averages less than 15mph because she runs at 10mph for twice as long as she runs 20mph (she takes twice as long to cover the first way as she does to cover the second part)

its a race, so why do they have to run two ways?

race is from a to b right ? in which case craig wins as his mph is higher

but if they did run two ways (a to b and then b to a) then they both tie because assume they ran for 1 hour
- craig will do 15 miles one way and 15 miles back - which is 30 miles
- joan will do 10 miles one way and 20 miles back - which is also 30 miles

Let Craig's time be tc and his total distance be 2dc. So
tc=2dc/15

Joan's time = dc/10 + dc/20 =3dc/20

compare their times: Craig's 2/15 to Joan's 3/20

2/15=8/60 and 3/20 = 9/60 Therefore Craig wins. Q.E.D.

We all know that it's women that have to win...they always get the last say, and that b*tch Joan is exactly the same. she was having a go at Craig saying that he never helps her round the house, so she was tired, so really she won, because she does more, even though we all know Craig works his b*llocks off in that job ! She is such a b*tch to him, and what a pain in the a*se she is when she's had a a drink !
