Using C++ u can do programmes to recognise patterns or handwriting. Or you can write a programme which takes another C++ programme to check whether its a true object oriented programme or not.
Using java u can write a chat room.

you could try making a paint like thing, that works with BMP files, opens them, reads them and edits them. By bmp files I mean monochrome, 4-bit, 8-bit, 24-bit and RLE compressed bitmap files. Create a nice user Interface for cut, copy, pate, stretch, skew functions. Try making the code as small as possible. Create object classes, button classes, Window classes that could be used again and again.
I am myself working on such a project.

hmm.. how about a program that can sugest/create a source code from problem description?
or a program that crawl the internet to find answer for spesific information, that including text, sound, or video..

rentacoder.com and freelancer.com are two sites which give projects so look on those projects and try to make those projects.These are real projects so u will gain real experience and u can do practise also.
