Suddenly, for no obvious reason, Internet Explorer has started blocking downloads from safe, legitimate websites.
For instance, when I try to download Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool, a message flashes up at the top of the screen saying Internet Explorer has stopped me from visiting a potentially harmful site (or words to that effect).
On the right-hand side of this message bar there is a "click for options".
When I click this, one of the options that appears is "download". If I click on "download", I find the download - from Microsoft or anywhere else - does not start.
But downloads set up months ago - such as anti-virus, firewall, etc, regularly download their updates on to my computer without any problem.
I have had a look in the computer's security settings. I can't see anything obviously wrong there. I have put https://www.microsoft.com in as a "trusted site", but that hasn't helped.
Could someone please point me in the right direction? Many thanks if you can...

Go to 'Tools' at the top of the webpage, then go to 'Internet options'. Click the 'security' tag on there and click the 'custom level' box, then you can change it so it prompts you instead of instantly blocking them. You'll see the options for each bit as 'enable', 'disable' and sometimes 'prompt'. Either enable or prompt (i'd recommend prompt, if it gets on your nerves because it keeps asking you can change it to enable, but it gives you less control.
