What diapers do you use at night to avoid leaks? I seem to be having a problem with this. Is there a diaper cover that you've found works really well, or a diaper that works well overnight or a combination of things? I would really appreciate any helpful answers!!!

I've found that there are three basic systems for nighttime diapering. Out of the following three, every cloth diapering mom is bound to find at least one of them to be foolproof.

1) Fuzzi Bunz stuffed with microfiber inserts. A Fuzzi Bunz is a pocket all-in-one diaper, and probably the best one on the market, imo. But keep in mind that pocket AIOs don't work for every baby. New FB's come with a micro fiber insert. For a heavy wetter you'd want to use two or maybe even three. You can find microfiber towels cheap in the auto department of your local department store, as many people use these to wash their cars.

2) A fitted pocket diaper stuffed with microfiber, topped with a wool cover.

3) A thick fitted diaper with doubler for added absorbancy, covered with vinyl or nylon pull on cover.

(Some people find that vinyl causes rashes, if so nylon works just as well. For your best bet find one that is not trimmed with lycra because when it gets wet it will wick onto child's clothing and bedding. If you can get your hands on Alexis Feather-lite covers, those are the best ever made. But they don't manufacture them anymore so the closest to them I've found is Cloth-eez.)

#2 and #3 are interchangeable- you could try the fitted diaper with wool cover, or the pocket fitted with nylon- whatever floats your boat. ;)

I included a link that has a list of affordable places to find cloth diiapers and covers, because even though cloth is cheaper in the long run the individual purchases can get spendy.

I used to just double my baby's cloth diaper at night and put a pair of plastic panties over the diaper.

Usually i would not fit the second diaper quite so tight as the first that way it was more absorbent since the moisture wasn't getting squeezed out of the diaper.

I never had any trouble with leakage during the night and she used to sleep through the night all the time and she was a heavy wetter too.

The other suggestions are good too except I don't like disposable diapers. They really defeat the purpose of wanting to use cloth to begin with.

Good luck.

I have found that NOTHING works as well for overnight as wool!

My baby fell asleep in a not-so-absorbent diaper last night, with the wool cover. I didn't want to wake her up just to put on a thicker diaper, so I left her be. She woke up this morning and her diaper was really wet, but the bed was dry thanks to the wool cover!

You might think "Ew. Wool is itchy!" But the wool used in baby diaper covers is very soft and it is lanolinized for maximum waterproofing and comfort. Plus, wool is naturally resistant to odor, bacteria, and it breathes better than any other waterproof material, so it's actually less sweaty than vinyl, PUL, or plastic pants.

You do have to take special care of wool, so that's slightly less convenient, but to me it's worth it for the benefits.

I used cloth diapers on my first. I did double cloth with a kooshie "overcoat" [diaper cover] -- eventually for night I gave in and went disposable - too many layers of cloth and there was slight chafing since the diaper was left on for the night.

AND a waterproof pad under bebe of course too!
