Maybe a little creepy but they also serve a very useful purpose don't they, proof that nature evolves to take advantage of everything at it's disposal for survival. After all many animals eat already dead animals but a vulture can eat that which would make many scavengers puke, thus the bald headv by the way which keeps them from having a feathered breeding ground for all the nasty things they might otherwise pick up. And of course don't know how close you've ever gotten but if not close I can also tell you they are huge,by the way if you want something to creep you out about them how about this, they won't necessarily wait until you're dead just until you quit putting up a good fight, lol

they're not at all intimidating, esp. the New World types, such as the turkey and black vultures. The old vultures, esp. the larger ones might look intimidating, although they have weak feet, they do have powerful beak which is design to tear off flesh. Well they have bald heads for a good reason. When you eat dead carcass and since they dig their heads into the carcasses, their naked head are exposed to the sun, which will kill any microbes. Believe it or not, vultures are clean birds and do bathe regularly. Ugly or not, they are important part of the ecosystem. Both Old and New World vulture play a key role in eliminating the waste of dead animals that would otherwise spread diseases.

Only, as previously mentioned, when they circle above me, which I have had them do from time to time as a birdwatcher. Some of our New World vultures are actually pretty attractive - king vultures are very colorful, andean condors have a beautiful, fluffy white collar, and black vultures and turkey vultures both have nice underwing patterns in flight. I guess I'm a "glass-half-full" type when it comes to vultures.

No . . . they're just doing what they have to do, and their consumption of dead flesh reduces disease caught from them. So vultures actually keep us safe, not the otherwise.
