That's a tough question because they are all the greatest in different ways.

Carl Lewis was the first to raise the bar in speed. I saw him run at the 1984 Olympics and damn that kid was fast!

Jesse Owens was the first to do anything as far as break color barriers and to be super fast.

Edwin Moses is the best of all time in the hurdles and nobody will come close to enduring the length of his career as well as having that many career wins.

Michael Johnson raised the bar a tad higher than Carl Lewis, but added some flair with the golden shoes.

Edwin Moses is the Greatest Intermediate Hurdler no doubt. 122 race winning streak from 1977 [defeated by Harald Schmid] to 1987 [defeated by Danny Harris]. Won the 1976 Montreal OG title in a New WR of 47.64 after only taking the event up a shortwhile before that. Was denied another OG gold because of the 1980 boycott, but won in LA 84 OG. Won the First 2 World titles in the 400H in 1983 & 1987 and set numerous WRs [the best being his 47.02]. He redefined the stride-pattern in between the hurdles and really paved the way for a plethora of sub48.00 & sub47.50 400m hurdlers

Michael Johnson is the Best Sprinter EVER for me. He dominated the 200 & 400 in his prime years and now holds WRs at both [19.32 & 43.18]. He won two World 200m titles [1991 Tokyo 20.01 into -3.4 headwind & 1995 Gothenburg 19.79 when WR was still 19.72], four consecutive World 400m titles [1993 Stuttgart 43.65, 1995 43.39, 1997 Athens 44.12 & 1999 Seville 43.18 WR] & 3 World 4x400R titles [1993 2:54.29WR [MJ split 42.94 on anchor], 1995 [he missed the 1997 relay because of injury] & 1999]

Though MJ did not qualify for the 1992 200 Final because of food-poisoning, he ran the 3rd leg for US and they won the 4x400R in a New WR 2:55.74. 4years later MJ won 200 [19.32WR] & 400 [43.49OR] Golds at ATL 96 OG but withdrew form the relay after an injury that he picked up in winning the 200. He returned 4years later to win 400 [43.84 on a chilly evening]& 4x400R Gold in Sydney. He retired in 2001 running in some relays as a kinda 'farewell tour'. He finished his career having set WRs in the 200 [19.66 ATL US Olympic Trials 1996 & 19.32 ATL OG 1996], 400 [43.18 Sevilla Worlds 1999], 4x400R [2:55.74 Barcelona 1992 OG, 2:54.29 Stuttgart 1993 Worlds & 2:54.20 New York Goodwill Games 1998] & Indoor 400m [44.63 - which was beaten by Kerron Clement in the 2005 Indoor season when he ran 44.57] - His PRs of 10.09, 19.32 & 43.18 for 100m, 200m & 400m put him atop of the list of the 'Greatest Sprinters'

King Carl is undoubtedly the Greatest Sprinter/Jumper ever. With 3 100m World titles [1983 Helsinki 10.07, 1987 Rome 9.93=WR [after Ben Johnson's DQ] & 1991 Tokyo 9.86WR of his own], 2 Long Jump World titles [1983 8.53m & 1987], 3 4x100R World titles [1983 37.86WR, 1987 37.90 & 1991 37.50WR] & 1 200m Bronze [1993 19.99]. He also dominated the LJ for ten years [1981 to 1991] with 65 straight wins, although he never broke the grossly-altitude-aided Long Jump WR of 8.90m by Bob Beamon in 1968 Mexico City OG, Mike Powell beat him to it [and also beat him to the 1991 World title] in the 1991 Worlds with 8.95m. He did actually surpass Beamon's jump with a windy 8.91m [+2.9, just 0.9m/s over the legal maximum allowable-limit] in what was the Greatest Long Jump series EVER [3rd round: 8.83 windy, 4th round: 8.91 windy, 5th round: 8.87 into -0.2 wind & 6th round: 8.84 legal] - it was thouht that Carl jumped around 30ft/9.14m even as far as 9.19m/9.20m but an incompetent official ruled it illegal. I've seen the jump, it was massive, probably 9.10m at SHORTEST. Carl dominates the Long Jump all-time list with 27 8.50m or more jumps [2nd best is Ivan Pedroso with 25]. With such accolades he sits atop of such a list of the Greatest Sprinter/Jumpers

Jesse Owens paved the way for athletes to challenge the barriers of race and inequality with his awesome displays in Berlin 1936 OG winning the 100m [10.3windy +2.7 on a soggy track], 200m [20.7WR winning by around 4m, the biggest victory margin in the event until MJ's 19.32 win over Frankie Fredericks 19.68 in the ATL 96 OG], LJ [8.06windy] & 4x100R [He ran an awesome 1st leg for the USA Team that demolished their own WR with 39.8 - they won by 1.33, easily the Biggest winning margin this event has even seen in the Olympics] - Jesse rubbished Hitler's ideas of ayran-supremacy

Jesse also set 6 WRs in one-day at Ann Arbor in 1935. He ran a WR 9.4 100y, 8.13m/26ft 8in LJ [which lasted until Ralph Boston broke it in 1960 some 25years later!!!], 20.3 220y [also broke the 200 WR en-route] & 22.6 220yd low-hurdles [also broke the 200m low-hurdles WR en-route]

All 4 were awesome in their day, and if around today would be challenging for the top, if not at the top, in ALL of their respective events

My Ranking:
1. Carl Lewis
2. Michael Johnson
3. Edwin Moses
4. Jesse Owens
