It depends on:
1. Your level of experience
2. Whether you have any pet allergies
3. Your financial situation - some have expensive food and
medical care requirements.
4. The length of time you are willing to commit to caring for a
particular animal - some live as long as humans and some
only live a matter of months.
5. Whether there are going to be children handling the pet or
treating it a bit roughly - some animals are fragile and
some don't like to be disturbed or they will become
depressed and stop eating or they will retaliate and bite,
scratch, sting, or use whatever other way they have of
protecting themselves. Some like lots of attention and
playtime.
6. Your work schedule - some pets need attention a couple of
times a day while some are happy if you take a week-long
vacation and leave them food and water.
7. Your likes/dislikes and personal preferences. Please note
that this is last on the list. Look into all the pros and cons
of owning different types of pets before purchasing or
adopting and you will have a better pet-owning
experience. Unless you tell your actual situation and
likes/dislikes nobody can advise you on which kind of pet
is best for you.

Hummm the best pet? With not knowing anything about you this will simply be my opinion.

If you want a pet that interacts with you--Dogs--of course the kind of dog depends on your living situation and the time you have to care for one.

If you want an animal that requires less care and is more independent--then a Cat.

For me--I could not go without having a dog but my second favorite pet is a Bird--a simple Bugie (parakeet) is great fun and easy to care for.

A step up on the bird ladder would be a cockatiel--a bit more interactive and lots of fun. These birds are known to live as long if not longer than dogs and cats.
I have had two and while they require more work than a parakeet it is worth it.

the best pet for you depends on the size and condition of your living quarters, your schedule, your resources, and the emotional need for a pet. If you want a pet is because you are going to take care of it, not because you want to show it to your friends, for that better buy an outfit. Exotic "pets" like insects, reptilians and birds are not happy being pets, so you are being cruel by forcing them to be entrapped. They also won't give you back the love and attention that you may give to them. Cats are good for people living in small quarters, and they don't require too much attention, they will ask for it. Dogs need more love and attention because they are more sharing of those emotions too. Small dogs are also usually easy to take care if you live in a small appartment. And to make it a plus in your quest to look for a friend to reward with your attention, adopt a pet, I'm sure that you will feel better with yourself.

I say dogs make the best pets because they are so loving and faithful. But if you are looking for a low maintenance pet, a cat is the way to go. They are loners.

That totally depends on your circumstances and on what you expect from your pet.
Dogs of any size are good for people with lots of time, they are social creatures and shouldn't be left on their own for extended periods. Big dogs need to be walked for 1- 2 hours every day.
Cats are more self-sufficient and can be kept singly in a flat, but they do what THEY like most of the time.
There are too many other pets to go into details, you'd have to go and ask people who have ones you might fancy about their experiences.

For what occasion? LOL

A snake or a spider would keep your sister out of your room. Especially if she doesn't see it in the tank from the door.

A trained dog keeps intruders from sneaking in you house through the backyard.

A pirana--kill it, chop off the head, clean it out, get the teeth, dehydrate the teeth till dry. Epoxy to yer Rim Job.
This will keep anal-intruders away, and it will be like a Playdoh Machine when you go poop--Knife or other accessories not included. LOL

A horse, A coal black, or dappled grey, purebred Arabian. (Yes, I've already been looking at saddles, bridles, grooming kits, blankets, boarding fees, and the actual horses themselves. Lol.) One exactle like this one : http://www.rideaufield.com/images/stallions/earl_grey_8578.jpg He's beautiful!!! Don't you think? I even have picked out a saddle to match a horse just like him. I doubt I'll ever get one, though. The only downside is they're sooooo expensive!

I heard someone telling me before about snakes, for they could nest anywhere moist and dark within your house.

But personally I still prefer dogs.
