Remember: any hint of orange promotes appetite, and blue diminishes it. Green and natural tones promote the sense of security, purple and red aren't good - they are not calm, but purple chairs or sofa will stimulate a good conversation and normalize the level of hormones in blood.
Lightness and saturation also play a major role: light/ dark makes the space bigger/ smaller correspondingly, and saturated colors have bigger impact on us,
so the general rule is: pastel colors for big surfaces, bright colors - for accessories (the smaller the object, the brighter can be its color)
A small addition: If your room faces south/ is sunny, try cooler shades, and if it faces north - then go for warmer tones.

It would depend on the rest of your decor and how open your dining room is to other rooms. Usually a calming or earthy color is best for dining room. Mine is a deep blue with light wood floor - it's open to my living room which is grey so this does blend well.
I do like in others' homes when the dr is a pale peach or even a khakhi color.

If a colour is needed, go with a basic one or two tone colour that is easy to cover, if you choose to change or enhance the scheme later. Try wall texturing to give differing depths and tones. Make the colour reasonably light if in a persistently dark environment; reasonably shaded or light colour if in a persistently sunny place.
Otherwise, let the dining room, furniture and cutlery do the talking! Preferably complementary colours for continuity and opposing or asymmetric colours for contrast. (cutlery, furniture and the room). Add some fruit, vegetables or raw food not likely to rot quickly to give visual contrast.

I guess it all depends on the style you would like to have. My personal favourite is wooden floor (or at least wood look), one dark red painted wall and the rest in whitish. Golden candleholders, some nice pictures on the walls

That totally depends on your taste, furniture style etc..
Mine is Navy blue walls with a white wainscot, and county style furniture and it looks fantastic...
Experiment with color..
Lowe's.com and I believe Home Depot have websites with color choosers.... I would check into that....

it depends on how big the room is but a light blue is good makes a small room seem bigger. or a burgandy for a larger room to make it more warm.
