A hallmarking doesn't guarantee a pure metal. It's just the maker's stamp.
Check the inner band. If it says a number then it's silver. But if there is no number, then it's fake. Sterling silver is what is commonly used in jewelry today, the number is 925.
It may also be a low enough silver alloy that the other metal (commonly it's nickel when it turns your skin) is the predominate metal. Even an 80% silver alloy can have enough nickel or copper to react with your skin.
Paint the inside of the band with clear nail polish or a jewelry protector.

Not trying to be rude but having it stamped ".925" does not mean that it is the ONLY real sterling silver. Having it stamped .925 means that is it Italian Sterling Silver which is made up of 92.5% Silver (hence the id .925) and the rest is made up of an alloy, usually Copper. Most will use a White Copper nowadays. I make jewelry, and I don't stamp mine .925 because mine is made of ALL Silver. The only one I have seen give a credible answer is queennerd79. He is right. Most times it will not turn your finger green, but occasionally there will be a reaction that will give that green tinge to the skin and cleaning it with a cloth or silver cleaning solution will help. Not saying that your item was or was not real silver. I am just saying that the answers given here are not correct.

That is funny, the girl who works with me is having the same problem with her gold rings. It is the acid, like mentioned in your skin that does this. I am sure it can also depend on what you eat that can cause this too. I have not had this problem, but it is not uncommon at all.

Your skin might be having an allergic type of reaction. My mom had the same thing happen to her with a ring from Tiffany's I gave her for Christmas. Very sad. . .It has to do with the chemical build up of your skin. . . .
