R & G are supposedly school contemporaries of Hamlet, so his roughly his age, whatever that is. The player has to believably play the King in the play within the play ("The Mousetrap"), and one could assume elder to Hamlet, but by how much? The answer to that helps to make any production of the play interesting.

R&G are supposedly contemporaries of Hamlet at school however in a scene in Act V Hamlet's age is given as 30 years which would make him one of what the German's call an 'ewige student' or eternal student. Which means if R&G are of the same ilk they would be around his age or if not they could be younger. The player is part of a troupe of traveling players and they usually had actors who played different types/ages. Since the Player is playing the King in the Mousetrap/Murder of Gonzago, he could be an older gentleman. He also runs the troupe I believe therefore seniority
