Depending on the make and model of your scanner you will have to go to the manufacturers website and look for updates/downloads. There you will have to look for what is called "Drivers". Then select the download for Windows XP for the make and model of your scanner. Download it. Remember the folder and name of the file. Once downloaded. Close any programs that you have open. Go to the Folder where the file is and double click on the file. This should then update your drivers for your Scanner. You may need to Restart your computer to allow the PC to reconfigure the Scanners drivers and it should work. Failing that Email your Scanners manufacturers informing them of your problem.

I had an expensive Umax that I bought when Windows 98 was the latest OS by Microsoft.

Well my wife wanted to start scanning photos and I tried to get it working with Windows XP.

All that could be done was to upgrade it by purchasing a new Integrated Circuit (chip) and new drivers from Umax. The chip was around $60 and they wanted $15 for the drivers. That didn't include shipping and handling.

I opted to buy a new Epson scanner that has pretty much all the bells and whistles that a home user wants. It does documents, all size photos, slides, negatives, and comes with their software, Elements 2.0. With the rebate the final cost to me was about $225.

If you think you'd like to purchase a new one, check out these sites.

if you provide the make & model of the scanner, it would help get you a more accurate answer here. in general though, you would go to the scanner manufacturer's website and look for drivers that you can download that would make it XP ready.
