I recall my differential maths at the university where we had to demonstrate which cup of coffee would get cooler if you put milk at first and then wait 10 min. or wait 10 min. then add milk. Now, let's get it a bit more mathematical: What woud be a suitable differential equation to demonstrate it. I can find of a few parameters: density of the rain, size of rain drops, wind direction and speed, walking distance, direction and speed, surroundings obstacle (woods, building, field, etc), human height, absorbtion coefficient of clothing, etc. :o)

The general opinion is that it would be better to run. When you run, you get wet faster, but for a shorter period of time.

They tackled this question on episode 1 of the Discovery Channel show "Mythbusters". They determined that where a straight falling rain is concerned you will get wetter running than you will walking. If the rain is driven by wind the difference is neglegible so run and get out of it quicker.

The Myth Busters actually addressed this...it turns out that it's better to walk. If you run then you are getting hit horizontally by rain drops as you race into them, but if you walk then only the top of you is getting hit (your head and shoulders). HOWEVER if the rain is blowing in from the side all bets are off...

I actually saw a TV show on this. They proved it is better to walk. They had someone wear a wet suit under normal clothing. First this person walked through the sprinkler fully dressed. He took off his clothes and they measured the water content. They dried the clothing, he put them back on and ran through the sprinkler. They found the clothing had up 30 percent more water content when the person ran.

Mythbusters did an episode on this (Discovery channel). They discovered that it is better to walk through the rain. When you run through the rain, more of your body surface is exposed to the rain, so more water is absorbed.

You will get virtually the same amount of rain per minute on you, whether you run or walk. But if you run you will get out of it quicker. So, as the song goes, run rabbit, run, run, run.

It depends on how fast you walk and how fast you run; If you were a very slow walker and a very fast runner, I think that it would be better to run.
