My husband and I have a friend, "Tom" who has custody of his twin 9 yr. old girls. We have been friends with him for 5 yrs. Problem: his daughters steal food out of my fridge when they visit. They then go outside and scarf it down somewhere real fast. I just found out about it--I was going to make my 6 yr. old daughter lunch and the snacks were missing. She said they ate them underneath a tree and tried to hide, but she saw them. Do I say something to just the girls, or dad too? I think this has been happening for a while--I already offer them juice and a snack when they come to visit, because food at their house is sparse.

In my opinion you should place the snacks for your child in a different location within your home. A place where the two girls don't go.

Yes. You must bring this out into the open immediately. They need to know that stealing is wrong and that if they want something they should ASK first. This is about more than just snacks. Its about respecting your household. Perhaps they are acustomed to other households where they can grab whatever whenever, although if this was really the case they wouldn't have to sneak. I guess it varies by household because when I was growing up I used to do the same thing- Some relatives had an "ask first" policy while others had an "open door" (pardon the pun) policy when it came to the fridge.

Yeah talk to the dad and do so with some sensitivity. If food is very limited in their home this may actually contribute to an eating disorder with the girls. In other words, they are taking the food and eating it quickly because they often go without. Sneaking food is usually the first sign of a future eating disorder. Please do not embarrass the girls. Recommend the father get nutritional assistance.

These girls sound hungry. A guy doesn't always keep his frige stocked well. I could never complain about what a kid eats. I figure if they are hungry, I'd let them have it. They probably don't have that great of home life. Cut them some slack.

I'd tell the girls first and if they don't listen, talk to the father. Food cost money and money doesn't grow on trees.

sounds to me like you need to set down your friend and the girls and let them know you do not have to just take it and hide they need to learn to ask befor they take anything from your home.

"food at their house is sparse"-You should feel good about feeding the needy, even if the needy lack manners!
