I just read a piece that says no cars will be allowed within 2 kilometres of the soccer stadiums during the 2010 Soccer World Cup. Any creative ideas on how they'll get there? You can read the article here http://www.sagoodnews.co.za/countdown/974171.htm And what is this this "green transport they talk about?

Note to all: I'm glad to hear that undergrounds and trams are in the construction phase, but do you have any other creative ideas? In Korea you can rent a bike or motorcycle from one place to another. Is there any likelihood of this or any other means of transport?

Hi Porgie.

Wow your question! Let me hit you with my answer;

Green Transport simply means Vehicles that will use the new type of fuel eg biodiesel. It's a type of fuel which is non-toxic, with low Carbon emission, non-harmful to the environment and at the same time giving your car the same perfomance it has on the present fuel type. If you pour it in a glass it looks green. I'm not sure, but I think the green fuel is cheaper than the gasoline.

No cars to the stadiums, it is actually a good idea, for many reasons.
1. The stadium might have 10 000 seats, but will never have 10 000 parking bays outside. Getting a parking bay now while only the local teams are playing (Pirates & Chiefs) is a nightmare. People end up parking on the roads, pavements, etc. People end up fighting over parking bays. Imagine what would happen when Brazil plays against Italy in FNB stadium.
2. Safety and security. For any unexpected disaster or emergency that might occur, the response of the emergency services should be rapid. Fire trucks, police vans and ambulances will have no access to the stadium if there are cars parked all around the stadium, with their drivers right inside the stadium watching the game.
3. Public transport is more convenient for the situation because it doesn't need to park, but just needsa to stop, empty the passengers, and go.
4. For far more lesser hassles, buy a bicycle. You can load it in your car, drive untill you are 2Km away from the ground. Park your car and get onto your bicycle.
5. 2Km is also a walkable distance.

Like everybody else has said we will be using trams to get to the stadium. I have been trying to think of another creative idea but looks like South Africa has already takent he best idea! Trams will be a good form of transport to get to the stadiums and i couldnt agree more!

I've been trying to look for more about this 'green transport' that they talk about but most articles with the word 'green' in it is actually representing money for some reason. Maybe our new transport will bring more money into SA or maybe it is a lot of money for the transport. Im not too sure.

Good question and i enjoyed it!
Kim.

The reasons Diesel gave you as to why we cannot park our car within 2km of the stadium is true. But where are we suppose to park our car 2km away from the stadium. Surely they will have to make parking bays?

I have not heard about the green transport but like Kim said maybe it concerns money in some way or even what Diesel said about the fuel. I dont know. Mabye we will have more info later on.

Hallo Porgie,

Well I'd say they should take all that money and use it to build above ground and under ground parking. I mean, sorry to say, but if we get taxis, and stuff like that how long do you think will we be able to use it?

We're gonna have that stadium, we might as well get the parking area for it as well, and get those "busses" they use on the airports (to transport the passengers to and from the aeroplanes) to get to the stadium.

If they do get taxis, it should be to get people who stays a far way from the stadium and transport them to the stadium. (Almost like in sun city, that is the route they're going and that's it)!!!!

The green transport I guess means easy available and safe transport. (Green is a calming colour maybe that is what they're trying to say)

And Hector, Elephants, in the city, nooooooooo I don't think so!

i think they are going to have buses and there will be alot of walking going on.

yes they are building the Gautrain but that will not take anyone straight to the stadiums, the people still need to go from train station to the stadium and back.

Green transport? Prob something to do with transport mediums that cause the least amount of pollution.

I read on news24 and the SA times (London) a few months ago that Durban is planning to build a tram system, like the one in San Fransisco. Whether they scrapped it or are going ahead I don't know.
Maybe they will have lotsa Rickshaw buggies running to and from the stadium (joke lol)

Well, lets see now. I have two donkies (Jakoppie and Maria) and so I guess we could get a cart together and do the whole rural donkey-cart thing. I guess I could make some extra ching .Its totally green transport afterall. All waste materials can easily be converted into lawn fertiliser. No smoke emmisions (donkey farts aren't too bad). Cheap fuel.
The list goes on and on and on.........

Or they could simply slap on some tekkies and klap 'n toon.
