I am looking at buying a couple of different vettes in this era but I am not sure where to look for the numbers on the engine to make sure it is original.(factory) can anyone help?

the numbers are on the passenger side front of the engine behind the alternator there will be a little ledge that sticks out of the block not the head there will be 6 to 8 Numbers telling you every thing you need to know the numbers on the back of the block only be for how big the engine is on a engine that old newer 80s blocks you can use the back numbers to tell you what it is its most likely a L82 or L49 i think. and there is numbers and letters any numbers in the block are useless unless there is numbers behind the timing Chane cover if there is a number 10 or 20 or both that's awsome thay are the best blocks Chevy ever made the 10 means there is added tin to help the iron flow it to the cast better if there is a 20 this means there is added nickle this means that it is a work Harding block the more you run the engine the harder it gets and if thay are both there you are siting on iron GOLD and i want to buy it

if your faceing the front of the vehicle the number will be on the driverside of the engine in the far rear where the transmission bell housing and the motor mount

gm numbers are from 6 to 8 digits long and no letters in it.
look in the block for those numbers.

toughgal(above) is correct. the only problem you might have is if the engine was ever rebuilt and the deck was surfaced. This would remove the stamping on the front driver side.
