Know what he likes and what he doesnt like. Getting to know him and not he pretends to be in public. (because you'll only get someone different). Treat him with respect. Take an interest in what interests him. Treat him as you would treat your best friend, because that's the best basis for a solid relationship. This means no nagging, cheating, etc. Friends don't act like that.
