Moths go through a complete metamorphosis with egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages.

A "Pupa" or "Larva" is what I believe you are referring to.

The Larva stage is the newly hatched, wingless, often wormlike form of many insects such as moths before metamorphosis.

The Pupa stage is the nonfeeding stage between the larva and adult in the metamorphosis of moths, during which the larva typically undergoes complete transformation within a protective cocoon or hardened case.
