Has Israel ever attacked Lebanon prior to this year (2006)? When was it and what prompted the attack?

as to what the cause was that depends on your point of view
Israelis would say it was Hezbollah's actions, Lebanese would say it was Israeli aggression and power

Yes,they have.
In 1982 they attacked Lebanon...The Lebanon War also known as the Operation Peace of the Galilee began June 6, 1982, when the Israel Defense Forces invaded southern Lebanon. The Government of Israel gave a green light for the invasion as a response to the assassination attempt against Israel's ambassador to the United Kingdom, Shlomo Argov by Fatah - Revolutionary Council and to artillery attacks launched by the Palestine Liberation Organization against populated areas in northern Israel. Another reason given for the invasion was as an intervention in the ongoing Lebanese Civil War to counteract Syrian influences in Lebanon.
So Israelis" tried to liberate" them from Syrian influence and they ended up occupying Southern Lebanon for 28 years...

Hezbollah did not exist before the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon. The culprit then was the PLO, and then, as now, Israeli self-defence was the excuse behind a cynical attempt to destroy Palestinian nationalism and secure land for annexation in the West Bank.
Recently, there were two daring attacks against military targets and Israeli soldiers were captured by Hamas and Hezbollah. These attacks happened because Israel and its patron refused to accept the results of the Palestinian election.
Of course, before Hamas was elected, there was simply no partner for peace. Translation: There is no Palestinian leadership that will accept the injustice the Israelis want to impose.
