Plant sterols are in many good foods from a widely varied diet. From what I read they say that it is difficult to get the minimum 2grams per day because the body is not very efficient in utilizing it. Therefore they have created Benecol and chocolate containing plant sterols. I can't take this too seriously because it seems like industry is trying to cash in on something that comes free with a good diet. Is it true that our bodies are not efficient at breaking them into useful companents? Or is there someother way of optimizing the benefit? I have high Choldesterol and I want to avoid statins.

Please read the question before you answer. I do not want to be directed to foods containing plant sterols. I know about those and I want to avoid them. I do not want to be directed to a pyramid scheme like Amway. If anybody cares to send me useful information please do. But if you are point gaming or abusing in anyway I will report you.

Plant sterols are effective in bringing your cholestorol levels down if they are high. We have margarine where I live that contains plant sterols. Sounds strange but it has been proven to reduce cholesterol levels.

vitasearch.com has good info.
See Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine - Murray & Pizzorno - for a complete discussion of cholesterol and how to deal with it thru natural approaches. Adelle Davis's 40 year-old book Let's Get Well tells about non-drug ways to lower high cholesterol too.
Good luck!
