A semiconductor is a solid state substance that can be electrically altered. When chemically combined with other elements, certain elements in nature, such as silicon, perform like semiconductors. A semiconductor can be considered as inbetween a conductor and an insulator. When charged with electricity or light or heat, semiconductors change their state from nonconductive to conductive or vice versa. The most significant semiconductor use is the transistor, which is simply an on/off switch. Semi conductors are also used in computer processors and in bullet train tracks.

A semiconductor is a material with electrical conductivity that is intermediate between that of an insulator and a conductor. The conductivity and other electrical properties of semiconductors are determined by the material's electronic band structure. Semiconductors' electrical properties may be modified by introducing impurities in a process known as doping. The ability to control conductivity in small and well-defined regions of semiconductor material has led to the development of a broad array of semiconductor devices, and these are combined with the simpler passive components to produce a variety of electronic devices.

Same as a real conductor only difference is he works on a semi train. :)

Krazykraut has a point though. Wiki knows best.
