Saddam was the lesser of the two horrors, in my opinion. At least there was an organized society and the laws were enforced. There was electricity on a daily basis, traffic flowed, and there was order in the streets. Oh, and the art museums still held the priceless treasures that "disappeared" when the US invaded.

Part of the problem you present is that your assumption is that all this violence has been and is random. Saddam's thugs had their own element of random attacks on individuals regardless of their "speaking out." Likewise, today's situation is not totally random either.
I am not an optimist in general, so I'd tend to stay with the devil I know than wonder which sect will wind up in charge.

I would prefer freedom, so I'd put up with the dangers of the war that is going on now. It is only temporary and freedom is always worth fighting for. You only think you would have known your enemy before. There were plenty of people who just disappeared during Saddam's reign- not all of them were speaking out against him.

I would prefer to be able to speak out. I would rather be killed randomly, then oppressed. This of course doesn't apply to all Iraqis. If I was a Shia who Saddam killed and continued to starve and slaughter randomly throughout his Presidency, I would be thanking my lucky stars right now.

SADDAM DEATH TOLL (KILLING HIS OWN PEOPLE)
182,000 - Iraq (1986-1989) under Saddam Hussein (just a 3 year span)
DEATH BY INSURGENTS (KILLING EACH OTHER)
In June the interior minister, Bayan Jabr, told reporters that insurgents had killed about 12,000 Iraqis since the start of the occupation
DO THE MATH AND STOP BLAMING BUSH FOR EVERYTHING

True,
There is nothing so threatening like not knowing who your enemy is. That is what would drive me in person to openly express what I feel about the Govt. so that I can know who really my enemy is.
If it chances that they kill me before much a do, I knew that afterall I was to die.
Always know that what the lips utter is from within the heart.
Thanks. Keep thinking.

I think it's really hard to judge until you've been in that situation, but I don't believe I'd ever prefer the former situation, as a female.

Of course I want to know who the Enemy is.I do know who the Enemy is now. Thanks to 9/11 and my ex-Husband. I don't like it thinking if My children or Family members are at work then someone may try to harm them, no one does. This is just wrong. But they would surly have to be Cowards for not showing their face, only in the Face of Death do they show themselves. So these people are only killing thier selves for no reason. God teaches love and not Murder. By attacking the United States they are doing nothing but killing innocent people that don't have nothing against them. Therefore do you think God is going to allow them into heaven? I just don't see it. God teaches to Love. Not to Hate and Murder. Why does thier God teach them to hate and kill themselves? I don't know. This is why I think that satan may be thier God and not our god. Satan is anyone's God that is for death and killing. God is for Life and Love. I feel safe today no matter what, because I am not about to allow anyone full of Hate and Revenge to stop me from doing a Good thing, as God would want me to do. Like live my life as well as I can. thanks and God Bless you!

The killings are not as random as you think. Any turkish people and people working on American military bases are in danger. Also some bombs they set for the American military kill other Iraqis.
