Particularly for Cassandra, this link is HARDLY a broad example of conservatives bringing us "the controversy, trying to make tolerance and attempts to bridge distances between peoples into an attack on christmas. and they did do this despicable thing."

This is Jon Stewart vs. Bill O'Reilly...not much of a sampling of liberals vs. conservatives!!

And for the record... I say "MERRY CHRISTMAS" and if I offend anyone, so be it!

To WMP55... this subject came about because of a comment another individual made on another question that wasn't even related to wishing anyone a "Merry Christmas" - but other questions have been asked about this. This is where it came from! I never said I agreed with either one of the men in the subject!

I say Merry Christmas to people I am positive celebrate Christmas.

I say Happy Hanukkah to those I am sure celebrate Hanukkah.

Most others, I say Happy Holidays beacause I believe in including everyone. Christmas was originally a Pagan holiday so I think it's hilarious when people get so uppity about it. According to the bible, Jesus wasn't born in December. Sure, celebrating Christmas is a party for his birth but the tree, yulelog, and mistletoe were all started before Christianity. Christmas should be about emulating Christ and He would never, EVER have made such a stink about words that are potentially offensive to some and leave out some. Jesus was about acceptance not forcing himself on others.

To those of you who refuse to say Happy Holidays or shop anywhere that uses Happy Holidays.....SHAME ON YOU. Jesus is probably shaking his head in shame over your selfish actions. How dare you fight to say Merry Christmas and then fight so others can't say what they want to. Freedom swings both ways.

First of all, this is a ridiculous subject and Bill O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh are the kind of idiots who got us into this mess.
That said, if a store wants to do an Arbor Day promotion or one for Franklin Pierce's birthday, so be it.
When I do use those greetings, I say "Merry Christmas" to family and people I know fairly well and "have a good holiday" to everyone else I see in December and probably won't see again until after the 25th.

I have a Jewish friend who comes over every Christmas. He always brings gifts, says "Merry Christmas", but then, he also celebrates Hanukkah and says "Happy Hanukkah".
I think people just want a reason to take their anger out on some one and some thing and they do it passive aggressively by attacking trivial stuff such as what greeting to say during the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

It's a matter of respect...if I don't know or unsure of the religious persuasion, if any of the person I'm addressing or if it's a 'mix' of people from a variety of religions, then I say "Happy Holidays" or "Season's Greetings". But yes, I prefer "Merry Christmas".

Why make something so positive and negate its purpose (showing love/appreciation) by being disrespectful?

If your principles are tied to outward expressions then shame on you. It should be in your heart, mind, and spirit. The only person who can take it from there is YOU!

This is my kinda question...i still believe in manifest destiny...yeah the concept is old fashioned, but it applies! america is supposed to be a nation that promotes christianity and teaches it to the world and is an example of loving caring people. If you don't like that i say Merry Christmas, but you like to say Happy Hannakah anyway, you are a dirty hypocrit and should go away. The thing is, america is ONE NATION UNDER GOD and if we don't want to fall apart, we must maintain that. if kerry had been electe pres. the whole world would've taken over us cause nobody here would have ANY morals whatsoever. Sry to make that into a whole big thing, but that is my view. If you say Happy Holidays just to be accomadating and refuse to let others see your own morals, are you being loyal to Jesus by spreading the good news? No! Stick to your morals, no matter who doesn't like them.. that is what i say! good for you!

I could personally care less. I don't celebrate Christmas and don't care what those who do celebrate it chose to call it. And I don't see why someone would get offended if you say Marry Christmas. If thats what it is then thats what it is.

The only time I have got upset, was when someone say Marry Christmas to me. I am a Muslim women in full garb, they know I don't celebrate it and it was said to me out of spite. I just look at them like they are stupid and say, I don't celebrate it but thank you. I try and be kind even though they were being sarcastic.

So what is the holiday besides Christmas and Hanukkah? Merry Christmas then Happy Hanukkah will suffice.

having someone say merry christmas to me is only offensive when after i say "thank you, but i dont celebrate" they go into "really?! how can you not? dont you feel left out?" or some crap like that. i'm not offended that someone would wish me well on christmas, i think its very nice of them.

I always say Merry Christmas. Everyone wants to take Christ out of Christmas and this makes me very sad.

Merry Christmas. Period.

Anybody raises a beef to me when I make that gesture out of kindness and spirit, then will get the complete opposite as in, "fine, go have a crappy Christmas you miserable _____!!!"
