You need to speak to a florist about the amount and colour of roses. I was told that a yellow rose was for friendship and that you would normally give 12 red roses to someone you loved but also you could give 1 red rose to someone love. so my answer is to contact a good florist they tend to know about these things.

A solitary rose means I love you, so that's completely acceptable.
I usually go with a dozen roses, or I love to buy a vase, flowers separately, and make my own arrangements. It's more "me" because I didn't just go out and buy it, I invested time and creativity into it.

It depends a single rose is very romantic. But you can also use the amount of a special number.

As many as you like. Sometimes all that is required is one. I think what is more important is the colour you choose; pick your lover's favourite colour of roses.

One of each color I think would be sweet because they all mean something different.
