Try Nokia - They allow contractual technical writers (you will compose material pertaining to cellular phones, usage, directions, etc.) to work from home full or part time.

There is no way to jump into freelance technical writing and instantly begin making money. First, you must be qualified to do the work. Second, you must actively market yourself. If you are just starting out, I agree with the Craig's list suggestion. You can also go to Monster.com and type "telecommute" in the keyword box to search for telecommuting jobs. The Elance suggestion is also a good one if you are breaking into the field; however, I do not believe it works for the long term. I tried Elance for 6 months and was ultimately dissatisfied because most of the buyers were not willing to pay anything even remotely close to market price. It seems they wanted something for almost nothing. Elance, like Guru.com, also charges a percentage of what you bill, but most sites like that will.

While a fee based on a percentage of billing is common and even to be expected, be wary of any site that charges you an up front fee to join. Many of them do not deliver and most are scams. I've included some links to some sites to get you started. Good luck to you.

My method is a bit time consuming, but it has netted me a few writing projects and web design projects.

Go to www.craigslist.org and look where it says "Gigs", down near the bottom right. Click on computers or writing, and look for people who need someone to do something for them and write them a nice email. Craigslist is for all over the US, so you have to search in each state and each region in the state, but it's worth it.
