The end of oil will be the end of civilization as we know it, unless Yankee ingenuity is allowed to flourish and discover alternatives.
Petroleum and coal have only been resources for 150 years. Prior to that, whale oil was the big fuel driving the Industrial Revolution. It's way overdue to perfect a clean, cool, safe energy source. Harnessing solar energy in some sophisticated manner involving nanotechnology seems best, but there's certainly some cheap, effective way to do it.
We just need to get the monopoly of the oil companies out of the way so people will try.

It is a limited resource because it is finite in supply. The claim that it is at peak production is unproven however, since (a) environmentalists block oil drilling in certain areas and (b) exploration continues to take place.
With that in mind, who knows when it is going to run out. It could be sooner if consumption continues to increase...however, I can remember the scare stories taught to me when I was a child in elementary school: that the earth's resources would run out by 2000, that the world population would overwhelm the planet, etc. Turns out that it was a bunch of political garbage dressed up as science education.
As for the end of oil being the downfall of American Empire...not at all. Without oil, we no longer would need to support countries who wouold have nothing to offer the world except terrorists.

It is called a limited resource because the supplies are what there is ...when it finally runs out there will be no more,it can't be created ;however, no one really knows how much is out there as seen this past week when a deposit was located in the gulf of mexico believed to be as large as all of the middle east supplies. I have not seen any examples of conservatives denying that it is limited and as stated no one knows when peak production will be reached or when it will run out. When it does run out it will not affect the US anymore than any other country in fact probably less as there is much advancement being made in alternative fuels like biodiesel and ethanol which are renewable and far cleaner burning . The US may in fact be strenthened by being poised at the forefront of these new fuel industries.

It doesn't seem to me that republicans deny it will run out; they just seem to dodge the issue. In reality, we never will run out of oil. You assume that we'll continue to use oil at the same rate as today. Granted, we'll continue to expend oil and find oil for a long time, but once we start to run out the price will increase (much like it did in the last year) but much more significantly. As the price increases drastically, other sources of energy become the cheapest, and we will use those instead. Hopefully, in time, scientists discover a panacea that is renewable, efficient, and pollution free.

Limited as in a finite source. Evidently there is more oil to be extracted, evidenced by Chevron's announcement of a major find in the Gulf of Mexico. Hopefully new technologies will make it easeir to find and extract oil from deep in the ocean. On the other hand I'm certainly in favor of alternative fuel sources.
Just today BMW announced a new Hydrogen powered vehicle. It's going to be cost prohibitive for most consumers (but aren't all BMW's) but it's the first in what will hopefully be many...

fossil fuel is limited basically because there was only so much of the jurassic period and that is where it comes from...hence the words "fossil fuel". we use it faster than it can be made. if we found another source and used it long enough oil would be created again but it would be thousands of years. but with the lessons learned about greenhouse gases why would we want to?
why do you think "they" are creating a way of life for us that entails never leaving your home. and it will be the fall of all empires

Limited resource means it gets exhausted after a time period. Actually it takes lots of years for the formation of oil by decomposition of organic matter under pressure for the hydrocarbons to get that bonding. Thats the reason why oil is found underground and in depths.

The end of oil would be the downfall of the whole world. Billions would starve.
We have plenty of oil, but the Democrats won't let us drill it.
Democrats want high oil and gasoline prices.
