Silverfish are so disgusting and serve no purpose. They eat rare books and wallpaper. ..
To rid yourself of such:
Check around your home for environments that may harbor silverfish. They prefer a warm, moist environment, so they may breed in substances such as mulch. Also check carefully under shake roofs and siding, where molds may provide the perfect silverfish environment.
Seal all cracks or holes going from your basement, attic or crawlspace into the house. Silverfish often establish themselves in these environments, then enter the home.
Remove the food supply. Seal storage boxes tightly, or store food, clothing, papers and books in plastic containers with lids that will keep silverfish out.
Use silverfish bait. Some baits work with boron and are therefore safe to use, even if you have children or pets in the home.
Try dusting or spraying. Go to a home and garden store and choose from a variety of products that are made for this purpose. Many experts report that dusting is more effective than spraying, but you still may need several applications.
Call a pest control company if you are unable to control a silverfish infestation yourself.

if you mean what is their purpose in Gods plan, then i cant help you.
ask Him.
otherwise they have the same purpose as you have... live, eat, multiply, carry on their genome...
as for any benefits from having them in your house... there are none... except that their existence shows that you should wipe the edges better...
but since they live in your house, and normaly dont leave it, they are not harmful either, as in transmitting diseases and such....
they do NOT eat paper... but they do eat fungus spores, including mould off old paper, and from behind wallpapers...
so all in all... more embarrassing that harmful, but still good riddance...

If you collect enough of them together and melt them down you can make a nice pair of silver earings. Do remember to take the legs out though! When you have enough legs you can then make CD lense cleaners.

They eat decomposing organic matter and fungal spores. They are like garbage disposals and help keep the environment clean.

I think they were put on this earth to freak you out.
They look nasty, ooze nasty stuff when you kill em, just are plain nasty!
They also hide in dark secluded places (so that can never be good).
