Traditionally it's a way of assuring that a child born to the couple is definitely the genetic offspring to the man. This is less significant in the days of contraception.
Nowadays, as far as I can see it's just a way of protecting your partner from the sickening jealousy of thinking about the person you love with someone else. That feeling can kill a relationship in an instant. Humans are territorial and we need to feel secure with our "posessions" (I use that term very loosely to include people)- partners being the most tricky of these because you can't control someone's emotions, so can never be 100% secure. Demanding monogamy at least removes the immediate threat that they will get involved with another relationship they ultimately decide they like better.

It's pretty dark, but durable. A bit expensive.
