I don't know about the word "rock" but according to the VH1 documentary "HEAVY - The Story of Metal" --- the first time the term "heavy metal" was used to describe music was by a journalist in England who was writing a review of a band's album. I am not 100% sure but I think the band was HUMBLE PIE and I don't know the name of the journalist but if you have the VH1 channel try to catch it - it has been repeated a few times this month.
