some background info: i have a MA in psychology and was planning to go to a PhD program, but did not get in. The only job I could find was as an administrative assistant, and the woman who hired me (and is now my boss) was very concerned that my interests are academic and that i would leave really fast. Anyway, I had to obviously twist the truth a bit in the interview, as i was desperate to get a job) and told her I was looking for something long term.
Now, the research center where i did my MA research has a full time job opening, and i know if I apply they will give me the position. I dont like my current job, its boring and unfilfilling...but my boss is always making comments to me about how im in it for the long-term and making me feel guilty. I've only been here for 1.5 months, but i feel ready to leave...but i feel extremely guilty. what should i do?? :( I plan on applying to PhD programs again for next year.

Do what is best for you. The company where you are working would do what is best for them and if the need arose they would fire you in a heartbeat. You did not twist the truth when you said you were looking for something long term because you were, it just might not have been long-term with them. If you do not like the situation then get out of it and move on to something that suits your objectives better. There is nothing wrong in that.

It may reflect poorly on your overall job performance, tempting your present boss to give you a less than glowing review to any future employment prospects that would call him to check your previous job history. It's only a few days - just tough it out as per your notice and be happy when it's all over.

Go for the job you want. Don't mind your boss. If you are going to apply next year for PhD, she'll have to find somebody else anyway... It's your future - live it.

Go with the job you want! There's no harm in trading up when it comes to jobs. Your current boss will get over it, and you have nothing to feel guilty about when you're trying to better yourself.

Apply for the other post, if you get it, take it! It's your life and you should not let this lady pressure you into staying. She'll be cross but who cares? You'll have the job of your dreams.
Good luck!!!!

apply for the position... you shouldn't be guilted into staying in a dead-end job that isn't paying the bills or stretching you mentally...
