Actually the first commercially successful colour photography process was patented in 1904 by brothers Auguste and Louis Lumiere.
Black and white was used as the colour films degraded really quickly. It was also quite tricky to store as it could prove quite dangerous. It was therefore more economical to produce film in black and white for general release.

And to answer your next question ... Why are old movies silent?
Because they couldn't record soundtracks on the fim either

Back in the old days movies were not made in color. They were produced in black and white. When movies began coming out in color color TV's came out. I grew up most of my childhood with a black and white TV. Later in my teens we got a color TV. WOW, I'm getting old.

they didn't know how to create an "eye" in a camera. they didn't know how to get the cones and rods from the way they work into a camera. people couldn't get the camera to absorb color, it only returned as shades of gray & black
