Why do so many people not get this?
First of all, the other person's name comes first, for instance it is not, "Me and John are going to the mall." Treat it as though the other people have more importance to be named first.
For the right way, if you take away the other person's name, you can tell which to use:
"John and me are going to the mall."
"Me (am) going the the mall," that sounds wrong. So it would be "John and I are going to the mall." (I am going)
THEN,
For other way
"Do you want to go to the mall with John and I ?"
Take them away, "Do you want to go to the mall with I ?"
That sounds totally wrong, so it would be "Do you want to go to the mall with John and me?" (to the mall with me)
It drives me nuts that even characters on tv get this wrong.
Does it make sense to you now?

By the way, the word "alot" doesn't exist. It should be "a lot".

And, yes, this was a question, WHY do people not understand it???

I don't get that myself and it drives me nuts also. A teacher of mine taught me that trick long ago, and I use it all the time. It is very simple, it doesn't take long to figure out and it makes you sound more intelligent! I think that people don't realize how much their grammar can affect how people perceive them. Sometimes too, I am sure it is just laziness, like not bothering to spell check.

I'm sorry but we live in an age when grammar isn't taught in school any more. It's not that teachers don't want to, it's that it's not part of what they're supposed to cover during the year...the things the kids are tested on.
The 2 things that drive me crazy, are the 2 that are spoken by our distinguished President Bush....
Febuary instead of February
and
nucular instead of nuclear
If the "leader" of our country can't speak properly, it would seem that he's symptomatic of a general decline of speech and spelling.

It all boils down to laziness. Some will argue that language is simply a tool whose purpose it is to communicate. As long as communication happens--i.e. the receiver of the information understands the sender's intent, it doesn't matter what form that communication takes. Get used to it.
One thing that drives me crazy while watching even the Science channel is how numbers are being said. I was always taught that the only time "and" is said in a number is if there is a fraction in the number. Such as two and three-eighths. Or , if one is referring to money such as 10 dollars and 65 cents. "And" is not supposed to be used in numbers like nine hundred six for 906. It is now more common to hear people say it as nine hundred AND six. It bugs me, but then I have to realise it is laziness and technically if someone else understands it, then it IS communication and valid. Maybe grammatically incorrect or improper, but still valid. And, yes, in my opinion it sucks.

I know this trick and it really helps. Although English is not my first language I do try to write the language properly, but be assured I make mistakes. ;)
One error I do not understand though is that of course you always supposed to say the other person's name first. Isn't that the case in all languages?

Well I see you put alot of time into this "question" more like a statement of fact to me. T.V. is not the place for individuals to learn proper grammar, that is what school is for.

A simple way to explain this to children is:
If the verb comes before, its "you & me" (He GAVE it to you & me.)
If the verb comes after, its "you & I". (You & I ARE GOING to the movies.)
You can see when its 'broken down', why this is so:" He gave it to you & he gave it to me." ---- "You are going to the movies & I am going to the movies."
I have found this the best way when teaching grammar.

If it is in the beginning of the sentence it is and I but at the end it's and me.
Example: John and I went to the gas station. He gave the pie to Andre and me.

You and I.
I is a first person singular subject pronoun-the subject pronoun that is doing the action.
Me is an object pronoun that are used when the action is being done to someone.
'You and me' or 'You and I-You and I is correct!Yhe reason for this is you is a subject pronoun.

Yes I totally agree. It also annoys me when people say that something is different to when it should be different from. I've posted a question here asking why so many people say off of instead of just off. " I fell off of the chair" just doesn't make any sense!
