No, absolutely not. I'm a musician, I've been playing for 18 years, and although in the current band we can read and write music, we don't. If you know what a melody is and can build a chord progression, that's all you need. Even if you do read music, there is no reading involved in writing, other than to write down what you compose. We could do this but its pointless, we remember what we write, or if its something complex we speed record it. The only thing we write down is the lyrics. The best advice i can give on songwriting is to know what a melody is, no melody = no song. Lyrics are useless with no melody. We ditch chord progressions if we cant think of a melody we love.

No you don't, but it does help. If you can't play and don't understand the concept of a song, then all you can do is write lyrics. You can always write a song, record it, and have someone who composes do your lead sheets. This I should know since I am a professional songwriter, and have been writing on a pro level for about 12 years now. Some things you do need to know though. Songs must follow some rules in order to be useable. The best advise I can give you, is to get you some books on songwriting, and you can hone your skills from there. I played in a band for many years, and played by ear, but I can read music, and found it difficult to play from sheet music in a dim lit club, so I just gave up on trying to play from sheets. When I'm working in the studio, I do play from sheet music then in order to do the composition properly. The thing to do is, if you can write, team up with the best musicians you can to work with you on the songs. Someone you work with must know how to chart the music in guitar as a rhythm chart, and not the tab. Even better would be a keyboard player that also composes. There are some computer programs out there now that will chart the music for you, but you have to be able to play the music, convert to MIDI file and load into the computer in order to get a composion. Guitar is the easiest to chart, and this is why I suggested doing it in guitar. Once you have a basic chart for guitar, then you can come back and do the others later. No use wasting time on a full blown production of a song unless you are satisfied it will turn out good. I hope I have been some help to you, and you get what I'm talking about. Have Fun!

Not necessarily, it depends on the person's preference and financial means. A good lyricist will put something together then pass the words to his partners who make the music by playing guitars, drums, piano etc. The lyricist would then give his / her input and make suggestions just from the sound.

Others might have to learn to read music because the facilities are not always there for practicing.

Not at all. If you have an understanding of keys and scales and what notes work together well in chords as well as a good ear and ability to write lyrics there is nothing to stop you.
